On September 18, the Consulate-General of Japan in Davao co-hosted “An Evening of Japan-Philippines Friendship: Madayaw Matsuri Night” at the Madayaw Café of Dusit Thani Davao. The event was officially recognized as a commemorative event for the Philippines-Japan Friendship Year, marking the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines.
The event served as the kickoff program for a nine-day promotion themed around the traditional Japanese summer festival. Throughout the promotion, the venue is decorated with festival-inspired displays, while the hotel offers a Japanese buffet. Visitors can also experience Japanese culture through activities such as goldfish scooping (kingyo-sukui) and origami.
During the kickoff event, Chindon Kisuke, a traditional Japanese chindon-ya troupe, performed Japanese festival music using the shinobue bamboo flute and showcased a variety of traditional festival entertainments, including the Shishimai (Japanese lion dance). The event concluded with participants joining in a Bon Odori dance.
Through this event, approximately 100 guests, including officials from Davao City and members of the media, experienced the lively atmosphere and unique charm of a Japanese festival.
