100th Anniversary of the Davao Japanese Community: Exhibit Booths and Japanese Cultural Show

On October 4, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the Atrium of the SM Lanang Premier in Davao City to open the 3-day Exhibit Booths and Japanese Cultural Show in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Davao Japanese Community. The ceremony was attended by over 300 distinguished guests including Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and officials from Kitakyushu City, Japan headed Mayor Kenji Kitahashi.
A Kagamibiraki or Sake barrel-breaking ceremony was also performed after the ribbon cutting. The Kagamibiraki, which is a Japanese traditional ceremony of celebration, was participated by Mayor Duterte-Carpio, Mayor Kitahashi, DFA-Mindanao Asst. Secretary Uriel Norman Garibay, Kitakyushu City Council Chairman Koichi Murakami, Consul General Yoshiaki Miwa, Davao Japanese Association President Mr. Kaneo Sato and Engr. Jonathan Nick Santos of SM Supermalls Mindanao. In his toast, Chairman Murakami wished for the continued and even deeper ties between Davao and Japan including Kitayushu City, and the good health and success of everyone.
The expo at the Atrium of the SM Lanang Premier had 48 exhibition booths showcasing products and services from various Japanese and Filipino companies. JICA, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Japanese tourism agencies and organizations assisted by the government of Japan also had booths and gave presentations. On the stage, an elaborate tea ceremony, a mochitsuki performance, a Yosakoi dance, a flute performance, Mindanaoan Fashion show by the Joji Ilagan Career Center as well as lively performances by the Pastel Mix and Japh Dolls were held. While at the Northwing of SM Lanang Premier, a Japanese Food Market -- organized by the Davao Japanese Community -- was set up to give the visitors a taste of some authentic Japanese dishes.
Moreover, a series of free Japanese cultural shows featuring performers and artists from Philippines and Japan were held at the SMX Convention Center Davao. Among the special presentations were a classical music concert featuring the Manila Camerata Artists; performances by the Senju Kabuki Dance Company; various martial arts demonstrations by the Davao Kendo Club, the Philippine Shotokan Karatedo Association International, Seiwakai Aikido Philippines; an exhibit by the Davao Bonsai and Suiseki Society; a speech contests, and even an animator and karaoke contests with cash prizes.
A heart pounding Goheitabayashi (wooden drum) performance was also presented by the Hibiki Group of Kitakyushu City of Japan -- the green sister-city of Davao. While the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School (PNJK IS) and Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (MKD) also provided the audiences samples of a wide variety of Japanese cultural and artistic performances such as a Taiko and Omikoshi performance and Yukata Fashion show. More than three thousand people enjoyed the three-day cultural events which also included the Mindanao Cosplay Summit, the Regional Qualifiers for the World Cosplay Summit Philippines.
On Sunday, October 6, a Bon Odori or a Japanese festival dance, organized by PNJK IS and MKD was held at the Northwing of SM Lanang Fountain Court to cap the grand centennial celebrations.
