National Day Reception in Davao City

A National Day Reception to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan was held at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City on February 18. The celebration was the first to be hosted by the recently upgraded Consulate General of Japan in Davao.
The reception was attended by more than 300 guests, including Councilor Antoinette Principe-Castrodes who represented Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio; Department of Foreign Affairs Mindanao Assistant Secretary Uriel Norman Garibay; M/Gen. Jose C. Faustino, Jr. of the Eastern Mindanao Command; Commodore Antonio Palces of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao; Commodore Roy Echeverria of Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao; P/BGen. Marni Caluya Marcos, Jr. of PNP Bangsamoro Autonomous Region; Commander Dennis Estrella of the Tactical Operations Wing East Mindanao; Undersecretary Janet Lopoz of the Mindanao Development Authority; City Administrator Marie Angelique Go, representative of Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabel Climaco-Salazar; Dr. Maria Ines Asuncion, Asst. Regional Director of the Department of Education XI; and Mr. John Carlo Tria, President of Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry along with the members of the Consular Corps in Mindanao, Davao City Council, various business leaders, academics, and civic organizations of the Davao community and representatives from the Japanese community.
Consul General MIWA Yoshiaki hosted the reception on behalf of the Consulate General of Japan in Davao. In his speech, he expressed his gratitude to the local government and the people of Mindanao for their support and cooperation in the activities of the Consulate General during its first year. He also emphasized Japan’s strong support to the development of the whole of Mindanao.
In Mayor Duterte-Carpio’s message, she mentioned Davao City’s long and storied connection with Japan and how the City appreciates the endeavors of Japan for the progress of Dabawenyos.
During the reception, the Consulate General served various sushi made from Koshi Hikari, a special rice which was brought in from Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Six varieties of sake and wine were also flown in from Japan specifically for the National Day reception.
The celebration was made special by performances from the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School’s choral group, Cantapella and violin performances by Mr. MACHIDA Takakazu of Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku. The Davao Bonsai Society also participated in the mini Bonsai exhibit inside the venue.
