Mindanao Youth Baseball Camp 2020
2020/1/17
On January 11, Consul General Yoshiaki Miwa attended the Mindanao Youth Baseball Camp 2020 held at the Davao City National High School.
Co-organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with Japan’s professional baseball team Yomiuri Giants, the Department of Education (DepEd), Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (MKD) and Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School (PNJK-IS), the baseball camp was attended by some 300 elementary and high school students and coaches from Davao City and nearby areas.
The Yomiuri Giants is one of the oldest professional baseball teams based in Tokyo and have won numerous Japan series championships. The baseball camp in Davao City is the first time the team has conducted such an event in Mindanao.
During the whole-day baseball camp, the students learned the proper techniques in pitching, hitting, fielding and base running. They were also taught about the rules of baseball and the importance of sports discipline.
The Government of Japan, through JICA, has been supporting peace and development in Mindanao, and considers sports as a powerful tool in promoting the ideals of peace and enhancing human security.
Dr. Basilio Mana-ay Jr., Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of the DepEd-Davao welcomed and thanked the Japanese coaches. Dr. Mana-ay hopes that the camp will become a continuing program to help the participants develop their full potential in baseball.
In his speech, Consul General Miwa encouraged the participants to take advantage of the rare and wonderful opportunity of gaining valuable experiences directly from baseball coaches who are former professional players from Japan. He also hoped that they would apply what they have learned to the upcoming 14th Davao City Baseball Cup and other future competitions.
Moreover, with the baseball camp’s theme of “For a resilient future through sports and disaster awareness”, JICA and the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office also conducted an earthquake awareness seminar to teach the participants about earthquake preparedness and response in view of the recent earthquakes in Mindanao.
